Life of the Beloved, by Henri Nouwen, is a short but powerful book by a man trying to reach out to the secular world. By his own admission he does not adequately accomplish that goal in this book. However, he does speak straight to the heart of believers and those trying to live a spirit filled life. He compares a life of following Jesus Christ as a life of being blessed, broken and given… words specifically chosen to represent Christian Communion and the bread of Christ. The bread is blessed, broken and given… Christ is Blessed, Broken and Given as a Holy sacrifice to forgive the sins of those who live in this world. We are to live our lives as blessed, broken and given. He then goes into detail on what exactly it means to live a life that is blessed, and explains how we are all broken and what it means to be given. I listened to the audio book which is narrated by Henri Nouwen himself. I found his accent to be a bit hard to understand at first, but the more I listened the less trouble I had understanding him. The audio book is only 2.5 hours long, so in the time it takes to watch a movie that you will likely soon forget, you could listen to this book and possibly be changed forever.
